Ocracoke Trip

THE
WONDERS
THAT
ALREADY
EXIST
:

1. THE ART OF
LEARNING TO LISTEN

This is me(on the right) and my new artist friend Mira(on the left)!!

2. THE ART OF LEARNING TO BE PRESENT

While in Ocracoke I was inspired to make this oil pastel drawing of the native Joe Bell flowers that grow wild all around the island. Per usual, I have tons of fun with color to make this every inch of this piece fun and engaging!
Also photo taken by me as I was walking through the neighborhoods! Similarly, I digitally edited the image and I photoshopped David and Granny into it. It was so much fun practicing how color and intensity of light affect the shading!! It’s definitely a rewarding challenge trying to reverse engineer/mimic the lighting in a picture. I encourage you to try it for yourself, you’ll learn a lot along the way! 😀

3. THE ART OF LEARNING TO SEE
THE UNSEEN

Every waking second is a new view that the world has never seen before. Don’t take that superpower for granted. Details exist to be seen, shared, and appreciated. Train yourself to see the unseen, and you’ll find the beauty in everything. Enjoy my photo collection from the days we were there, and I hope that you too can see what the world walks by and misses.

What are your favorite pictures? Let me know!

4. THE ART OF LEARNING GOD’S MERCY AND FAITHFULNESS

Wow! You made it all the way down here?! Impressive! Here’s a treat as a parting gift: Ocracoke’s oldest cemetery, housing many from the infamous Howard family that still lives in Ocracoke today, lies Ann Howards grave, born in 1724 and died in 1842, she lived 117 YEARS!!! The place was gated, so apologies for the awful photo, as it was taken from a distance with zoom. But I have deciphered it for you! Can you imagine she was one of the first to colonize America when it was all rich untouched land where you had to fend for yourself for food and everything, she lived through the revolutionary war, writing of the US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Her obituary reads a few lines from an Christian hymn at the time (yes, I looked it up!) “Lo, the prisoner is released. Lightened of her fleshly load Where the weary are at rest She is gathered unto God.” What a beautiful God-centered life she must’ve lived faithfully till the end. I wonder the amount of lives she impacted, the stories she had to tell, wisdom she must’ve gained, the longsuffering she learned to endure. Below is her husband’s grave… George Howard 1749-1806. She was 25 years old when her husband WAS BORN, and when he died, she lived another 38 years. Insane! (Must’ve been slim pickings lol)

Making this, I found something beautiful, somthing that proves God’s faithfulness and unchanging nature. From researching the old hymn, it became clear to me that Ann believes in is the same God that I put my trust in today. The same God taught then is the same God taught now. Even in our vastly different cultures, the principles of the Bible, God’s Word, has proven to stand the test of time unlike every other historical document that get quickly outdated. That’s because His word is THE truth. Objective truth is proven to stay the same. Jesus says For I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6. For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever shall believe in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. – John 3:16. In other words, God loves us so much that he was willing to come down to our level and take the punishment of sin for us so we would not die and therefore have eternal life with Him is we so believe.

So, what then, matters more on Earth than pursing an eternal promise that is freely given and not attained by anything we can do by our own strength? The truth is free and simple, so why is believing it is hard? There’s no better time than now to believe. If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” – Romans 10:9-10

Thank you for reading. May God get all the glory, Amen.
