1. THE ART OF
LEARNING TO LISTEN
Look around you. Everything within the space you are in right now is the unique result of the local world around you and the people who live in it. Whether or not you may realize it, everything from the natural landscape and ecosystem affect the way people live in it, and therefore the traditions, customs, economics, architecture, and culture are intertwined and work together like a tapestry that never repeats. Every thread has a distinct purpose, one cannot exist without the other. And when every thread is woven together, it creates something new… a form of beautiful controlled chaos. When I first began this whole book series concept, I knew in order for Bestu Bay to be a believable, immersive, ever-evolving place teeming with life in every aspect, I needed to find a real world counterpart to use as reference. Though it is possible to create an entire world from scratch, it is almost impossible to account for every factor or really know how things would react when put in the same mixing bowl. So like many fictional story writers and artists do, I opted to use our own world as a base point. It took hours of extensive research to find a place that exists on Earth that most closely matched my vision of Bestu Bay. Of the several contenders, there was one that consistently captivated my attention and checked all the boxes: Ocracoke, North Carolina. It’s one of the many barrier islands (but is the only one with a bay on it!) right off the Atlantic coast of the USA!
Ocracoke stood out to me simply because of how magical the place seemed. It’s a tight nit community of 810 people… a place untouched from the often cruel realities of our fast paced greedy world. In Ocracoke there’s no chain fast food restaurants or stores, only locally owned business. Some people use cars out of convenience, but everyone mainly walks/bikes everywhere or uses golf-carts because everything is within walking distance. Everything is authentic and fresh from the food, to the art sold, to the history, to the people who live there. Everyone looks out for each other, bands together in the face of natural disasters, and celebrates together. Nobody locks their front doors, in fact many even leave them wide open sometimes during the scorching heat of summer! On the monthly police safety report in the local newspaper, one of the few notable things listed was that a 2×4 wood plank went missing! Cherry on top is that the ocean is within walking distance, or go drive 5 minutes down the road to a larger beach if you prefer. It’s the ideal world we all wish we were in. Now you may ask, ‘how in the world do you know all of this? You can’t get all that info just from the internet!’ Well, you’ll never believe the crazy real story that led me to being able to travel to Ocracoke and stay for four entire days for free… where I was able to experience first hand and collect field research of this truly magical place myself!!
This story begins in 2021 when I decided Ocracoke was Bestu Bay’s place of inspiration. Unknowingly though, for a year and half I was oblivious to a wildly unlikely divine coincidence: the fact being that I have a great Uncle(my Grandma’s brother) who has owned a house in Ocracoke for nearly 40 years?! Ok, praise break: can you imagine of all the cities on the ENTIRE PLANET, of all the coastal/bay places I could’ve chosen, I picked a place I had no idea a relative of mine lives! I do believe that God planned this out- even before my great Uncle knew he would be living in Ocracoke. It goes to show that God really looks out for our future and is working even when we don’t know it or see it in the moment. So now, no longer was this a far fetched place that I could never visit due to costs. I got in contact with Uncle Phil and told him all about my aspirations for this book series, and without me even asking he was THRILLED about the idea and offered for us to come down for a few days. We planned it for the upcoming summer, and BAM! A wonderful summer trip from June 31st-July 3rd was born.

Being in Ocracoke for those four days led to some most memorable days of my life! Seeing Uncle Phil, visiting every shop, walking down every street and nature trails with my camera always out, tasting the food, going to every local event/festival made for an action packed journey. With my mom as my traveling buddy, we would go around every day place to place with my clipboard, sketchbook, and note pages ready to write what I heard and saw. This mainly meant mustering up the courage to ask as many locals I could about how long they’ve been here, what they love to do, their experiences, their favorite traditions, places, local events, folklore, and more. Of all the beautiful people I met and had wonderful long conversations on the trip, I want to give a special shoutout to my friend Mira(@mirachibichan on Insta), an extremely talented local young artist who has grown up on the island. I met her outside while she was working on her latest commissioned work for the Ocrafolk festival that was happening the next day. It’s rare for me to say this, but I was honestly stunned and inspired by her amazing work for her age. And being an artist myself, 45 minutes naturally passed by as we both got caught in the unavoidable passionate artist talk, as well as hearing her captivating passion for living in Ocracoke.
Although I was ALWAYS scared to approach locals in the moment, without a doubt my favorite memories of Ocracoke were making unexpected friends with people I just met, hearing their stories, and understanding their unique outlooks on life. My favorite question to ask everyone was “what is one piece of life advice you’d share with the world?” I would write down everyone’s responses to later use as inspiration for writing. Here are a few of them that stick in my mind! First we have Kitty, local professional artist who owns a gallery on the main street, wanted to motivate all those who have far fetched dreams, summing it all up with “Just do it!” She then showed me a quote by Howard Thurman she keeps taped to her desk “Don’t ask yourself what the world needs. Ask yourself what makes you come alive and then go do that. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive”. How cool!! Kitty also mentioned in her life she has learned that solely judging yourself based on what others think is dangerous because if you are, you’re easier to manipulate. Mary Vankeich said “Don’t let your job get in the way of pursuing what makes you happy.” The local young man who works at the ice cream place, who loves the salted caramel pretzel flavor told me “There’s no excuse to be kind to someone who is different than you.” Juju, an old retired lady who loves working with kids and used to live in Hawaii said to “just have fun!” In a family owned boutique with locally made goods such as wood carvings and soaps, where cute little stray cats could come to chill out, they all agreed that we all deserve to “Relax and chill out!” Lilian simply encourages us to loosen up and “Don’t take everything so seriously.” –a reminder that we don’t have to be perfect or have everything planned out because life is full of unexpected turns.
From all that I’ve gained from this trip, I don’t think I would’ve got the full experience if I had just kicked backed, relaxed, and played it safe like the average tourist. For Ocracoke isn’t just a place, it’s a people. If you ever visit(even beyond Ocracoke),I urge you talk to the locals. Be curious, stop yapping on about your life and what you want, and start listening to wonders that already exist!
2. THE ART OF LEARNING TO BE PRESENT

On a 2.5 hour ferry ride to Ocracoke island, there is much opportunity to practice your quick life drawing skills. Each of these is 2-5 minutes! I get what I can get, and honestly, the risk of not being able to finish it is what makes it a fun challenge. Forces you to draw like there’s no tomorrow! You’d be surprised how good your instincts are!
“and thanks for the traveling artist who randomly sketched me from the audience!” then turn or swipe left to the fourth image… that’s my drawing! That day Kelley Shinn, a talented author from Ocracoke, was officially launching her memoir “The Wounds That Bind Us”. To kick things off she read aloud the first chapter outside the Ocracoke library. It’s actually a tradition that if anyone from Ocracoke published a book or someone wrote a book inspired by Ocracoke that they hold an opening ceremony for it outside the library! While I listened I drew her live as she was on stage, what a beautiful moment to capture it was!
It was a pleasure to be there, to see her in full confidence, letting herself be vulnerable in front of a large crowd and sharing with the world for the first time her grueling physical and emotional experiences first hand. Kelley is undoubtedly one of the strongest women I’ve ever met in person. She has endured and overcome the unthinkable. Please check her out and buy her book! She has such a powerful, life-changing and inspiring story to tell. The day after the ceremony we happenstance ran into her as we were in the humble Ocracoke history museum, and we were able to talk for a brief period of time She is such a compassionate person, I wish her the best.

3. THE ART OF LEARNING TO SEE
THE UNSEEN
Every waking second is a new view that the world has never seen before. Don’t take that superpower for granted. Details exist to be seen, shared, and appreciated. Train yourself to see the unseen, and you’ll find the beauty in everything. Enjoy my photo collection from the days we were there, and I hope that you too can see what the world walks by and misses.

4. THE ART OF LEARNING GOD’S MERCY AND FAITHFULNESS

Wow! You made it all the way down here?! Impressive! Here’s a treat as a parting gift: Ocracoke’s oldest cemetery, housing many from the infamous Howard family that still lives in Ocracoke today, lies Ann Howards grave, born in 1724 and died in 1842, she lived 117 YEARS!!! The place was gated, so apologies for the awful photo, as it was taken from a distance with zoom. But I have deciphered it for you! Can you imagine she was one of the first to colonize America when it was all rich untouched land where you had to fend for yourself for food and everything, she lived through the revolutionary war, writing of the US Constitution, and Bill of Rights. Her obituary reads a few lines from an Christian hymn at the time (yes, I looked it up!) “Lo, the prisoner is released. Lightened of her fleshly load Where the weary are at rest She is gathered unto God.” What a beautiful God-centered life she must’ve lived faithfully till the end. I wonder the amount of lives she impacted, the stories she had to tell, wisdom she must’ve gained, the longsuffering she learned to endure. Below is her husband’s grave… George Howard 1749-1806. She was 25 years old when her husband WAS BORN, and when he died, she lived another 38 years. Insane! (Must’ve been slim pickings lol)

I await the day to meet you in Heaven, Missouri V. Oneal.
Making this, I found something beautiful, somthing that proves God’s faithfulness and unchanging nature. From researching the old hymn, it became clear to me that Ann believes in is the same God that I put my trust in today. The same God taught then is the same God taught now. Even in our vastly different cultures, the principles of the Bible, God’s Word, has proven to stand the test of time unlike every other historical document that get quickly outdated. That’s because His word is THE truth. Objective truth is proven to stay the same. Jesus says “For I am the way, the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.“ John 14:6. “For God so loved the world that He gave His only Son that whoever shall believe in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.“ – John 3:16. In other words, God loves us so much that he was willing to come down to our level and take the punishment of sin for us so we would not die and therefore have eternal life with Him is we so believe.
So, what then, matters more on Earth than pursing an eternal promise that is freely given and not attained by anything we can do by our own strength? The truth is free and simple, so why is believing it is hard? There’s no better time than now to believe. “If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.” – Romans 10:9-10
Thank you for reading. May God get all the glory, Amen.
